Just to recap the
first volume was a sheer delight from start to finish and set
impressive new standards of what audiences should expect when their
favourite "vintage" movies are given a digital
makeover. The good news is that Volume 2 continues in the
same vein.
Fans will be overjoyed to find the latest set contains Doris's
much sought after debut picture Romance on the High
Seas (which receives its first DVD release) as well as
My Dream Is Yours, I'll See You in my Dreams,
On Moonlight Bay, By The Light of the Silvery Moon
and Lucky Me.
As an understatement this set is overflowing
with some of Doris's most "enchanting"
musical-movies providing an uplifting dose of 1950s nostalgia.
This set is guaranteed to have you singing along in no time to catchy
ditties like I'm in Love, It's Magic, Someone Like You, It Had to be You,
Ain't We Got Fun. Till We Meet Again and I Speak To The Stars etc. etc.
Warner Bros. also get an A+ for again finding a wealth of rare &
previously unseen bonus materials; such as the comedy short So You Want a Television Set
featuring Doris and Gordon
MacRae.
One thing to make abundantly clear although some titles were issued in 2006 by
Warner Bros. (UK) these American releases boast much
superior picture quality. In plain speak the UK cut corners by using tired masters originally intended to make their VHS tapes. The US
in contrast commissioned NEW transfers especially for their 2007
project!

Doris Day began her screen career when she arrived at Warner
Brothers in 1947 for the filming of this irresistible movie. In it a married couple suspect each other of fooling around.
When the husband announces he can't join his wife on a planned
ocean cruise, she hires a nightclub singer (Georgia Garrett) to
masquerade as her. Whilst she stays behind to spy on her husband.
Confused? There's more...hubby then hires a detective (Peter
Virgil) to keep an eye on the person who he thinks is his wife.
Thanks to the directing skills of Michael Curtiz,
who keeps the plot moving along smoothly, these
improbabilities become rather believable! Honestly they do..

This
is an updated, remake of the 1934 movie Twenty Million Sweethearts
that starred Ginger Rogers and Dick Powell.
Martha Gibson (Doris Day) is a newly
war-widowed single mother who Doug Blake (Jack Carson) decides
is ripe for stardom. With the help of friend Vivian, he brings her to Hollywood,
auditions her, only to find her falling in love with the very person
who he wants her to replace aka Gary Mitchell (Lee Bowman).
Bugs
Bunny also makes a guest appearance in a musical
number with both Doris and Jack.
Notably the legendary composer Harry Warren

a decade to write the new songs for the film. These include I'll String Along With You,
You Must Have Been A
Beautiful Baby and Someone Like You.

Some critics may have unfairly dismissed this film as
a copycat of Meet Me in St.
Louis but in my opinion the characters and script (based on
Booth Tarkington's Penrod stories) are more
enduring.
This is a
really enchanting, wholesome movie set during World War I. It follows
the very animated lives of the Winfield family, who in the movie have
just relocated to a small town in Indiana.
Doris plays Marjorie
Winfield (the tomboy daughter). Marjorie is more at home on the
baseball pitch than in a dress. This somewhat begins to
change on the arrival of William Sherman (the boy next door
- played by MacRae) who has some
rather unconventional ideas for the era e.g. not believing in marriage or money.
All in all this begins to cause friction with
Marjorie's father and sparks fly...
Commercially On Moonlight Bay became one of the
biggest box-office hits of its time and remains one of
Doris's favourites. The
popularity of the movie led to sequel By the Light of the Silvery
Moon.
Songs featured are
Till We Meet Again and the title tune.

Candy Williams is a performer in a third rate
musical revue called 'Parisian Pretties', headed by wisecracking
joker Hap Schneider. Fallen on hard times and stranded in Miami
Beach, the members are forced to work in a hotel. Then, when a
handsome producer (Dick Carson) arrives to put on a show the
troupe believe this is their lucky break. Although Doris
was said to have been dismayed by this film's script she
convincingly pulls off this 'fluff' musical.
Songwriters Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster
(Calamity Jane) reunite to write another delightful score that features
The Superstition Song, Men Men, I Speak To The
Stars, The Bluebells Of Broadway and Lucky Me.
